The Courage to Confide

The Courage to Confide

At just 12 years old, Kennedy was a bright and creative student, who excelled in her middle school classes, spent hours designing and playing games online with friends, and always found ways to make life more fun for her siblings. Whether she was laughing over YouTube videos or tackling a school project, Kennedy’s world seemed to be full of joy - but beneath the surface she carried a devastating secret.

Earlier that year, Kennedy had been sexually abused by a family member at a sleepover and lived in paralyzing fear—fear that no one would believe her, that she would be blamed, or, worst of all, that she may be pregnant as a result. The thought of facing family gatherings, reunions, and holidays filled her with dread rather than joy. Instead of looking forward to being an 8th grader – bragging rights as one of the oldest in school, picking out a dress for the school dance, and earning more screen time – she was consumed by the terrifying thought of doing it all with a baby. Trapped by silence yet desperate for answers, Kennedy found the courage to confide in her mother and after a report to local law enforcement, she was referred to the CARE House.

From the moment Kennedy walked through the doors, she was met with kindness and support. Compassionate professionals listened as she shared her experience during a forensic interview, creating a safe space where she could share the truth without fear. When she struggled to find the words and speaking felt impossible, she wrote them down instead. Her interview was recorded while law enforcement investigators watched from another room, ensuring she only had to tell her story once. A medical exam relieved her fears about pregnancy and infection and provided an opportunity for a specially-trained medical provider to collect evidence and document any forensic findings. Before she even left the building, law enforcement requested the recording to take to the Solicitor’s Office, setting the wheels in motion for an arrest warrant.

Now with the justice process underway and access to quality services, Kennedy is beginning to heal. Through evidence-based counseling at the CARE House, she is learning to manage her anxiety and process her trauma. As she moves forward a dedicated CARE House Advocate will be by her side every step of the way, guiding her through the legal process, while her parents receive the support they need to navigate the challenges ahead. Surrounded by a network of compassionate professionals—from CARE House staff to local law enforcement and a full multidisciplinary team—Kennedy no longer has to face this journey alone.
