The mental health field is continously learning more about adoption and becoming more competent in helping families. So, lets talk about it! One of the areas where research is focusing is on life books. Have you done one? What has your experience been with them? For a trauma provider they seem to have a lot of similarity with trauma narratives. Here is what we are hearing is important! 1. Start early (from as soon as seperation if possible). 2. If your child is too young to participate leave space. The life book needs to include their story, their perceptions, their traumas. 3. Be honest, in the most kind way possible. Often their lives haven't been all unicorns and rainbows. 4. Take time, this is not meant to be something done in a day but over quiet some time with room to grow. AND FINALLY 5.
